Comments Went for a week of diving with another couple. One a diver one not. The resort is not very big. While we were there maybe there were 30 - 40 people there. The dive boats are clean and comfortable. Easy to get in and out of the water. We never had more than 10 people on our boat on any dive. The dive package had 2 morning dives and an afternoon single tank dive. Night dives were available and you could drop the afternoon dive to do the night dive. They also had shark dives available offsite at an extra fee. We didn't do night or the shark dive but people that did had a very good time. The diving was nice and easy. We had virtually no current any day and the visibility was usually 60 to 80 feet. Sometimes better than that. One day we traveled by boat to the Western tip of the island. Did two dives in the morning there then had lunch at the sister resort the Mayan Princess. This is a bigger resort much better suited to families and non-divers. The diving is better from Turquoise Bay but we had three solid dives down by the Mayan Princess. On a typical dive we would see some really nice coral formations and varieties and lots of smaller fish and little critters. Lots of lobsters, crabs, etc. We saw plenty of Eagle Rays and lots of turtles (hawksbill and green). Did not see a shark of any kind all week. There were swim thrus and a couple of connected caverns we swam thru. We never could not see the entrance or the exit and there were no cramped spaces. Saw a really big octopus in one of them.
Nitrox was available but the fills on these tanks was spotty. The typical dive profile was such that it had no real effect on the dives which usually lasted 55 minutes or so. Very safe and well run dive operation all around. All safety briefings were held and all safety equipment was on hand and in good condition. We had our own gear but the gear that was rented to others looked fairly new and in good shape. I would recommend diving here for sure.
The resort itself as I said is not very large but has a great waterfront and beach. Cruise ships send day visitors. During our week it was on three days. They say it's usually 2 to 4 days a week in the cruise season. They come by bus after the divers leave, stay until around 1 - 3 pm and are gone by the time the divers come back in the afternoon. When the cruise guests leave the facilities are open to hotel guests. The best part of these are the over water cabanas and bar. They usually have a happy hour bartender out on the pier for hotel guests. Lots of fun. The food was generally very good. A different theme or variety every night. Breakfast and lunch were pretty standard fare but good and plentiful. Drinks were also good and plentiful (after diving of course). We like to drink bourbon and after a frank discussion with the hotel food and beverage manager Bourbon was obtained and was available the rest of the week.
The rooms are clean and plenty big. The beds and pillows comfortable. A little older and in need of some upgrades but nice. Water was hot and the air conditioning was cold. We had a nice deck overlooking the ocean and enjoyed coffee and cocktails there.
The beach was sandy all the way out to chest deep water and there are ample chairs and tables because of the cruise guests. The only real issue are the bugs. Mosquito and no see-ums. Especially at dusk and early evening. My wife who was very diligent with bug spray and Skin-so-Soft had no issues. Me and our friends who weren't so diligent got eaten alive. It took two weeks after coming home for the itching to stop and the bumps to go away. So be vigilant.
The staff was extremely friendly and we had a great time with them. They really did everything they could to make sure you had a great trip. From the manager to the maid from bartender to dive master. All were excellent.
