This trip was planned to fill in some photography and videography of the south end of the Mesoamerican Reef. I considered the resorts which are famous on Roatan, but the no-see-ums and mosquitoes posed a huge obstacle. The Roatan Aggressor would solve that problem, but I had to come to terms with the live-aboard anxiety still intense from the Conception tragedy. While I have done several hundred live-aboards, was I ready to do another? I researched the Aggressor safety protocols and discussed my concerns with industry colleagues. I decided to book a trip and I am glad to be back into the live-aboard world. The Roatan Aggressor practices up-to-date safety protocols and far exceeds the requirements of “Safety of Life at Sea” and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Getting to Roatan is easy with direct flights from many North American and European hubs. I arrived Friday for the Saturday departure. I stayed at the Roatan Yacht Club. I booked a marine view room and was less than 3 meters from the Aggressor’s dock. The Yacht Club restaurant was good and the room very comfortable. The crew accepted luggage at noon and began boarding exactly at 15:30. The meet and greet was smooth, and the vessel’s owner, Alan Roberts gave a good, attention-grabbing briefing. He also ran the trip as captain, along with an excellent crew of 7. There were 14 guests aboard.

Safety on-board and in the water was central to the entire trip. Each cabin had a smoke/heat/CO detector which was tested weekly, and smoke challenged monthly. Emergency routes out of the cabins were clearly marked with three options leading to forward, mid-ship, and stern exits. The vessel had a dedicated “boat safety officer” who was on duty from 22:00 until 06:00. He patrolled the boat and made certain that nothing was amiss, including all battery chargers disconnected. While there were USB ports in the cabins, charging devices in the cabin was not allowed. A dedicated central charging area was located on the spacious camera table. With all this, I still installed my own smoke/heat/CO detector and placed a “go bag” by the cabin door. The small dry bag contained my passport, wallet, and keys to my house. I used my cell phone in airplane mode as a clock and wakeup alarm.
In water safety was typical of industry standards today. No solo diving. One or two dive masters in the water who would lead a dive. Divers were free to follow the lead or do their own dive. A hard maximum depth of 110 ft was enforced. Everyone was using 32-33% EAN, so this was no burden. Diver accountability was done by a crew member logging each diver’s reported depth and time.

The diving was around Roatan, with an excursion to Coco Grande sea mount off of Cayo Cochinos and Utila. With the exception of Coco Grande, the current was mild. All dives were from the Aggressor (no pangas) and were out a circuitous route to return to the boat. Entry was a typical giant stride from a swim step. The crew helped put your fins on and handed cameras to divers after entering. Exit from the water was easy. A crew member in the water removed you fins and you climbed up one of two excellent ladders. A crew member on the swim platform was ready to help as needed.

The reefs were very healthy and the small to moderate-size marine life plentiful. Wide-angle reef photography was very good. Macro was also good, but not as diverse as other locations on the Mesoamerican Reef. Small tropical fish were abundant. The dive sites offered a variety of visual experiences and were totally enjoyable.
The dives included two shark-feeding events. While enjoyable and well-executed, I am professionally opposed to this activity. I participated and got some really good photography and videography. I had a long, private talk with a senior crew member and we agreed to disagree. Without government intervention, as Mexico has done, this behavior-modification activity will continue.

Overall, the week of diving was fun. I am pleased with my photos and video clips and look forward to putting some finished presentations together.

The food on board was exceptional. Every meal was well-prepared and the daily menu variety served to satisfy the most ravenous passengers. The hot soup at lunch every day was great. The homemade breads were amazing. And a birthday cake/party for one of the guests was well done.
The guest cabins were comfortable and efficient. Space is at a premium, so the cabins were small.

I have dived several Aggressors and the Roatan Aggressor ranks high is performance, comfort, and diver satisfaction. The well-trained crew is committed to making the week spectacular and they did for me.
