Comments Dive operation was well organized and solid. I have some constructive feedback, but it's more about the resort than the dive operation. Still, all told, we had a very good trip. I'd recommend this resort to families that have some divers and some nondivers in their group. If all the members of the trip are divers, there are probably better options.

Let's start with the dive operation. Mark was our dive guide and Andy was our boat captain. We dove with them all six days. We found them professional, friendly, helpful and competent. We were able to dive our own profile, and despite only doing 2 dives a day and staying to 60-70 ft on most dives with an average depth of 35-40 ft (with a handful of dives down to 100-110 ft), I switched us from air to Nitrox for the back half of the trip to give us a little more cushion on our no deco time.

Coral seemed reasonably healthy by Caribbean standards. Not as good as Little Cayman, much better than Cancun, and lots of life. We saw plenty of seahorses, shrimp, dozens of turtles, a few rays, two free-swimming green morays, and plentiful fish (and only a handful of lion fish). El Aguila wreck and Hole in the Wall were highlight dives (though we ran into to other groups on those dives more often for obvious reason).

As a side note, the dive crew did a great job accommodating a gentleman who didn’t have the use of his legs. Bravo for making adaptive diving happen!

On the dive operation, two things to be aware of, perhaps areas for improvement: There were days were we had up to 12 divers with one guide. This was fine for us, but we have dove with operations that always have better ratios. Also, dive briefings were pretty cursory. I enjoy a more detailed, in depth briefing, but everything was safe, and I view great briefings as extra points, not baseline.

Water temperature was consistently 81F, and typical for us, I wore my 1 mm top and shorts and was fine, and my wife wore her 3 mm full suit plus hood and was quite chilly at the end of dives. It's nice to have BTU privilege.

On two days, a dive photographer accompanied us and we were able to purchase photos of the dives and ourselves post trip if we wanted to. This was unobtrusive from our perspective, and a nice opportunity to get quite a few high quality photos when we're just low-level GoPro photographers.

The resort was good. That’s about it. There were good points, and some real frustrations. If your attitude is “This is a 3-star Honduran resort,” then you won’t be disappointed.

The best thing was that it worked for our group, which included my wife and I, two divers in our forties, plus my in-laws (knocking on the door of 80, nondivers, and not the most comfortable travelers), sister-in-law and family friend (non-divers in their forties), our 12-year-old daughter (with severe intellectual disabilities) and our 6-year-old daughter (neurotypical and precocious).

Everybody was basically happy, which is hard to pull off on a trip like this. And I got to dive every day, so I’m not complaining.

Accommodations were clean, solid, and acceptable. Hotel rooms were a better value (~2000/week for a single person, ~2600/week for a couple) than the small suite we needed for our family of four with small kids (~6000/week, which did include diving for the two adults). But, everything was fine.

Transfers to and from the airport (about a 30 minute bus ride) were well executed - no problems on either end.

Staff were generally friendly and helpful.

Kids club did the job. Our 6-year-old loved it. They did lean a little hard on sweets and TV to keep the kids happy, but what the heck, we were on vacation.

The kids club was closed on Mondays, which was not advertised in advance. We had four adults in our group that were happy to take on our 6-year-old for a day in addition to our 12-year-old, but there was a diving couple in our group that was relying on the kids club to be able to dive. They ended up working with the resort to hire a babysitter at extra expense, otherwise one of them would have had to take the day off of diving.

Food was sometimes quite good, sometimes deeply underwhelming. Hot tip - “Mediterranean night” at the buffet means “Italian night,” or “Lame Pasta night,” depending on your interpretation. Do not come in with the visions of olives, hummus, spanakopita, and shawarma that I did. But many of the buffets were quite good. Breakfast fresh tortillas were a highlight, as were most of the fish options.

The seated, served options for dinner were interesting. Again, some food was great, some underwhelming. The real takeaway was slow service, which might be fine if you’re looking for the leisurely dinner, but wasn’t great when you’ve got two kids to entertain.

Most of our group had some amount of gastro trouble in the final days, trip home, and days after, but thems the breaks.

Also kind of a bummer was the tipping situation. You’re essentially hit up with tip jars at every turn, and some staff are clearly gunning for tips in awkward ways. We elected to tip our dive guides, one bartender and one security guard that stood out, and put a couple hundred in the general tip box at the front desk, and crossed our fingers that those would be fairly distributed.

Both pool and beach areas were quite nice, no real complaints. There are quite a few vendors on the beach, but they were mostly okay when you waved them off.

We took a water taxi one afternoon to West End to walk around and shop, which I would recommend, but I was glad to be staying in West Bay.

I’ve listed complaints here to give the full picture, because if I’m being honest, I don’t think I really had it. But it was a solid trip overall that solved the problem of a multigenerational group that has divers and non divers. Again, if this is your group, I’d say Mayan Princess/Mayan Divers is a solid option. I love diving, but having a job, kids, and family obligations for vacation time make it hard, and this outfit effectively circled the square. That is saying something. And, if it’s only divers on the trip, you can probably find something that works better.
