Comments The Resort
The Mayan Princess is all inclusive. We found a bargain package to include all meals, drinks and 16 dives for a week. The resort has long central pool area in the main courtyard with 2 story casitas housing four 1 bedroom units each. These units were larger than expected with a kitchen, dining, and sitting area. The AC was excellent and hot water was unlimited, but the rooms are a little tired and could use some updating. There is a 3 story structure housing the lobby/front desk at the front of the resort with 2 bedroom suites above. Get rooms 101-103, 202-203, 138-130, or238-230 for beach front with sunset view. Be warned that there is a fair amount of entertainment around the property mostly from the neighboring resorts with music running until 10:00 at night. Rooms 120-126 and 220-226 are the quietest as they would be furthest away from the noise areas. The 2 bedroom units seem like they would be further away and quiet, but I’ve been told the dive shop next to them is noisy with compressors running at night and tank-clanging in the morning. We were there during the low season so the population of guests seem to be about half Latin American, many with children. Most of the US guests we met came here frequently (some more than 10+ times) and don’t purchase the all inclusive package, instead opting to eat outside the resort. The beach is nice but fairly crowded and loaded with vendors Most meals were at the buffet, however there are 2 ala carte restaurants and several bars. Food is excellent, but limited menus compared to other all-inclusives. There is a snack bar open all day, but the food is not recommended. The surf and turf dinner at the Calketts ala carte restaurant was exceptional and impossible to fully consume.

The Diving
Two tank morning dives are scheduled for 8:30AM and do not return to the resort for intervals. 1 tank afternoon dives are at 2:00. Our night dives were at 6:15. We had a 16 dives included in our all-inclusive package, but purchased extra day dives for $35 a tank. It doesn’t look like much if any SCTLD in the area, but there is some bleaching. Fish life has receded and algae is taking hold, so there is not a lot of color on the reefs. We were pleasantly surprised with true concierge diving, with the crew bringing dive gear to the boat, setting up the tanks before every dive, and carrying gear to the locker rooms and rinsing and hanging in assigned lockers. All we had to do was show up to the boat with a mask. Dive guides Eddie and Darren were excellent, along with captains Clyde and Andy. They were highly professional and allowed us to dive our own profiles as long as we surfaced with the group. Although they suggested max depths, the only real requirement seemed to be a 1 hour dive limit. All boat rides were within 25 minutes and never went to East side of island or north of the wreck due to rough conditions from the wind all week. There was not a lot of schooling fish life where we visited as all the sites in the area are heavily dived
In general, the diving reminded me of Cozumel 20 years ago- before the cruise ship traffic increased. Roatan does get some cruise ship activity, but not highly noticeable as ships only dock on Tues, Weds and Thurs. The Mayan Divers boat fleet consists of 3 single screw diesels. The most we ever had on at one time was was 12 and there was still plenty of room to move around the boat. All boats had a camera tank as well as dedicated camera tanks at the dive shop. The resort doesn’t have a dock so it was always a rear ladder entry from the beach in waist deep water. One in our group had knee replacement 2 months prior and they were very accommodating to his needs.
