Comments I wish I had known that this resort primarily caters to time share owners and cruise ship day trippers. Diving operation is an afterthought. Don’t come here if you want a diving vacation. Come here if you want an all-inclusive resort with a nice bar, a pool, timeshare condos and so-so food at exorbitant prices. Owners are developers who built this resort to sell timeshares, not to make this a truly luxurious resort that justifies the $$$$$ prices. If all-inclusive resort is what you want, you get far better choices at lower cost in Dominican Republic or Cancun.
Now to the dive operation. On the afternoon that we (a family of four divers) arrived, we went to the dive shop and introduced ourselves. We had booked a 15-dive package + 1 free night dive for our 10-day stay. After looking at their computer, the dive center manager told us that they had no record of our dive bookings. After a frantic call to our US-based travel agent, they finally “found” the reservation. Apparently the front desk failed to inform them of our dive reservation. As I said, diving operation is an afterthought.
The dive shop is located in a small building at the front of the resort, a good 5-10 minute walk to the dock. Thus, instead of lugging our personal gear back and forth every day, we decided to bring our gear back to our villa, which was right on the beach overlooking the dock. Speaking of the dock: the boat dock was small and damaged, with missing planks and the end twisted into the water. As such, it was not usable when the weather was a bit windy and the sea surgy (which was most of the time during our stay). When boat diving was not feasible at the resort (which could be days on end in late December), divers were bused for one or more hours to more protected sites up the coast. It took 8AM-3PM to do a two-tank dive. Shore diving was not possible during this time as well.
One other thing to keep in mind is that the dock is a municipal dock, and thus the two dive boats shared it with water taxis, snorkeling boats, tour boats, etc. the dock could get crowded and you would have to wait until the space is clear for the dive boats to dock.
Now about the diving: some nice wall dives with big barrel sponges and lots of colorful small fish. Sometime we saw small barracudas and one time we saw a turtle. Besides that, no big fish. The reef is in sad shape, with a lot of hard coral bleaching but the soft coral seems to be doing OK, though not as big or plentiful as I remembered from Anthony’s Keys thirty years ago. Our highlight included a school of nearly a thousand blue tangs, a seahorse, beautiful angelfish and a barely-seen stingray.
About the free night dive: they kept promising us “tomorrow” but there was always an excuse when tomorrow came. Finally, on our last diving day, they couldn’t find a boat and instead took us night shore diving instead. There were two instructors for the four of us. One in front and one in the back. It was a long 15-min swim on the choppy surface from the beach to the reef, and once we got to the reef we had to find and swim through the narrow channel to get to deeper water. We were hoping to see octopus and squids and other night creatures. We didn’t see anything interesting so we decided to head back after 45 mins. At that time, the two instructors ended up swimming together at the front, leaving the four of us behind trying to find our ways back in the dark. My wife and daughter ended up beached on the coral reef, unable to move and yelling for help. The dive instructors were unaware until we signal to them that two of us were missing. This situation could have been avoided if they were paying attention to us instead of each other. Overall, we found that the expat dive staff looked tired, overworked and dispirited. We wouldn’t blame them too much since we didn’t get the impression that the resort management cared too much about the dive operation. We did find the local divemasters and boat drivers to be very helpful in showing us stuff and taking us to interesting sites. Most other divers were either getting certified, newly certified, or occasional divers. We were experienced divers and found the diving to be repetitive and uninteresting after a while. Next time, if we go back to the Bay Islands, we would head directly to Utila. We heard the diving is better over there.
