Comments After returning to Roatan for a warmup dive, prepping for another trip, I was shocked by the changes in the reef. Sad, so very sad. Massive bleaching, algae everywhere. It is clear the reef is dying - excessive building without proper infrastructure to control untreated dumping into the ocean. I was also shocked by a lack of effort to try and restore this once vibrant area.
Better news- Coco View is an excellent facility with excellent people. I would trust my grandchildren to dive easily here. They are exceptionally organized – well done!
I think Coco View focuses on the less traveled divers taking out groups as large as 13 with a single dive guide. We had to ask where the oxygen, fire extinguisher and first aid kits were and were never shown any. With this many folks on a boat and only a dive guide and vessel captain, there is no room for error. One of the vessels while we were there was involved in an incident where a diver got stung by a lionfish, but they seemed to have handled it without disrupting the other divers.
Note – if you are expecting normal 2- tank boat dives in a day each in the morning and afternoon, you will be disappointed. 1 Boat tank dive per trip is the norm. They “let” you dive all you want in the dead reef they call the front-yard.
Tipping was an irritation. With the price of things, I was taken back for the request of another 15% per person in our party in tips – NOT including vessel crew!
