Comments A couple great reports on this resort including the front-page article in the October 2024 issue of Undercurrent. New proprietors Tom, Laurie, and Elizabeth are putting their touches on the business along with the great local staff.
A few things stand out and not to be redundant with the other extensive reports:
1) Tranquility - Resort is located on the island of Guanaja and tucked into the hillside at Mangrove Bight. Second to the fantastic diving was taking in the evening star gazing with an after-dinner cocktail on the third deck. As the mountainous island remains fortunately fundamentally undeveloped, there are no traffic or other over civilized noises to break the silence. Did I mention it's also one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean?
2) Underwater Topography - The volcanic structures adjacent to the bight were incredible. Black Rock and Titos Labyrinth provided a plethora of endless swim throughs. Having dove previously on Roatan and Utila, these formations were especially unique and entertaining.
3) Pleasurable Dive Pace - We had 2 other divers join myself and my dive buddy for the majority of our weeklong stay. The dive "skiff" (twin 150HP outboards) was a joy to dive from and likely could squeeze 12 divers but comfortably accommodate 8. Everything was according to plan and schedule, and we never felt rushed. The smaller scale experiences make one feel like you're diving with family and not just diver #19 on an industrial dive trawler.
4) The Local Staff - Simply fantastic! From Chino the dive guide to Catalinas custom happy hour cocktails, the local staff were focused and ensured top service at every point. It's clear they enjoy their jobs and wanted to make certain each guest was a "return candidate".
5) The Food - Clearly, no dive report would be complete without mentioning the food as apparently, there exists a common notion that one might starve to death while on a dive trip. The food here: Homemade hearty island fare. We actually had to request a reduction in plated portions so as not to leave leftovers. Every meal was an experience and delicious with dinners topped off by some magic deserts. It takes a lot of effort and planning to consistently put out this type of fare given the remote nature of the island and this group has it nailed!
In closing, Clearwater needs to be on your dive destination list. A great variety of diving in a beautiful, serene environment. We will definitely be back and next time for more than a week.
