Comments Rough Times at Roatan
My mid-November dive trip to Roatan (Anthony’s Key Resort) was diminished by bad weather. First, my Saturday flight was cancelled by Delta due to a bad storm in the Roatan area. Delta automatically rebooked the flight to the next day, but I lost one day of my seven night package. Surprisingly, the resort would not refund my lost day or give a future credit. They said to contact the major tour company that booked my trip for me.

Weather continued to plague the diving. Seas were ok early on my first dive day (Monday), but got rougher in the afternoon. Tuesday was pretty rough all day. Wednesday, we started off on the resort dive boats, but rough seas caused us to come back to the resort on a resort bus. The next two days, we went to the south side of the island on the bus, and boarded the re-located boats for two dives. Then we returned to the resort via the bus. This extra transit time cut our dives to just two a day. One of those days we were pelted with a hard rain and were miserably cold in the boat speeding to the dives sites.

One of the dives on the south side, “Mary’s Place” was spectacular. It had two long and fairly tight tunnel swim throughs that were in fairly good condition. The 10 divers plus a guide did a great job not kicking up sand or crashing into the nearby tunnel walls. After the swim throughs, there were numerous different schools of fish to greet us. We also had two wreck dives in very good visibility. One was as deep as 111 feet, and had some amount of penetration available. A highlight of two dives was the rare “Toadfish” found in crevices. Another highlight was not seeing any lionfish! The dive guide also found a couple of seahorses, arrow crabs, and other macro critters. However overall, I don’t think the diving was as good as most sites in Indonesia, Micronesia, or the Philippines.

Anthony’s Key Resort is a really nice resort, with great food, nice rooms, attractive grounds, a great gift shop, good rental equipment and uniformly great customer service by all staff. Although the rooms are clean with good furnishings and plenty of hot water, the one ceiling light was very dim, and electric outlets were obstructed by beds and a refrigerator. Their bar includes a huge game room and entertainment most every night. The resort has many attractions in addition to diving, including a dolphin encounter, snorkeling, fishing, kayaks, and a trip to Maya Key with a barbeque, island history museum, and a native animals zoo. Surprisingly, I had no encounters with the feared “no-seeum” sand fleas!
