Comments This was not the best trip.

January is during the height of the rainy season, and it poured almost the entire trip. While divers "get wet anyway," the dives were a bit dark, and it was very cold on the deck of the boat after dives. Weather is no one's fault, but there is more.

All dives are strictly guided; experienced divers have no flexibility. Our diver master happened to have been burnt out, but even if he had been enthusiastic, I would have found the rigid rules frustrating. There were strikingly few fish. I recently heard from someone that a couple weeks before my trip there were many fish, so perhaps it had to do with the weather and lack of sun light.

The boat returns to the dock between the two morning dives--which turned out to be nice given how cold it was in the rain, but it struck me as a waste of diesel. Also, while I have no issue with carrying my gear back and forth each morning and afternoon and don't expect valet-type service, divers with any physical challenges should know that one's boat might be a few hundred feet from the lockers.

I had planned to dive Nitrox, but the process for analyzing and recording oxygen levels was extremely work-intensive, involving at least five or six steps. Towards the end of the Nitrox briefing, my friends and I walked out and decided to dive air.

Most of the rooms are on a little island and divers are transported to the mainland and back on a small boat. If that sounds unappealing, ask for a room on the mainland. The restaurant and mainland rooms are up about two or three flights of stairs, so there is some exercise involved. If the diving had been wonderful and flexible, I wouldn't have minded the transport to and from the little island and the trips up and down the stairs, but the diving was so forgettable that most of my memory of the trip is of minor hassles. The food (all-inclusive) was good and varied.

Shore diving is offered (off of the island with the rooms), but I did not take advantage of it partly because I didn’t feel like transporting my gear from the mainland and back. There is a second little island, also reachable by the little boat, which has a decent area for snorkeling. There is a dolphin dive; I passed, but a friend really enjoyed it.

Anthony's Key Resort is on the North side of Roatan. I am told that the South diving is better. This may or may not be true, but in the unlikely event that I return to Roatan, I would choose CoCoView.
