Comments Scuba Shack is one of the few dive operators in Maui who, because they operate out of Kihei, were untouched by the fire in Lahaina. I had dove with them many years ago as a beginner, and signed up with them again for old times sake. For the reasons that follow, I would suggest that they are better suited to beginner divers than to those who are more experienced.

Their prices are higher than those of other dive operators on Maui, but their price includes all equipment rentals, including dive computers, which is something that beginners would be more likely to take advantage of. We were told that the dives would be between 45 and 60 minutes in length, but when we arrived at the boat, we were told that a 45 minute limit would be strictly enforced, and in fact, the dive master lectured my wife for taking one extra minute beyond that for her safety stop. I was also surprised to hear during the dive briefing the instruction to divers to abandon their safety stop, even if it was not completed, if they reached the 500 lb level in their tanks. Even the most inexperienced divers should be able to maintain an extra minute or two at 15 feet without draining a tank from 500 lbs to a problematic level.

The captain and crew do their best to convey the idea that diving is fun, and maintain a light-hearted banter throughout the morning. This is something that may be welcomed with a view to encouraging new divers to continue the sport, but the short dives and higher prices are not attractive to more experienced divers with their own gear.
