Comments We had 3 mornings of 2 tank dives with Pacific Rim Divers. Nice solid boat; short 5-10min boat rides. Typically their max dive group is 6 divers. Six is fine; more than that it gets crowded. Saturdays seem to be their busiest day for diving so it’s probably better to NOT go on Saturday if you have a choice. They seem to repeat dive sites a lot, as we noticed from diving with them in the past. The coral got hit pretty hard about 5 yrs ago from the bleaching event and it is far from recovered. Low coral cover of ~30%. Saw good diversity of fishes and creatures, though not too abundant. Yellowfin and Blue Goatfish; Surgeonfish; Damselfish; Dascyllus; Potters Angels; Bicolor Anthias; Whitley’s Boxfish (females); Butterflyfish- multiband, big longnose, onate, milletseed, raccoon; Yellow tangs; Triggerfish: Gilded, Lei; Wrasses: Psychedelic, Rockmover; Scorpionfish: Decoy, Titan; Slipper lobster, Spotted Eagle Ray, Nudibranchs- Bicolor, Gloomy, Phyllidia; Octopus; Frogfish; Triton Snails; lots of eels – morays, dwarf moray, viper; and more.
The dive operation gives you 80minute bottom time which is great. However we rented regulators from the dive operation which had a built in console containing Zoop dive computer - which doesn’t really work for repetitive dives in Hawaii with an 80min dive time. On my second day after 1 dive, I had to stay at 25 feet for most of my dive unless it would go deco. My personal dive computer is a Sherwood which I was wearing but I had to follow the Zoop. After I complained enough about not asking for a dive computer, they finally removed it from the console. On the last day of diving I could finally enjoy my dive with my own computer. Note to self- if you’re renting a regulator, find out if a computer is built in and if you have your own computer, ask that they set the built in computer to GAUGE mode ahead of any diving with it. Otherwise likely you’re likely to be unhappy.
The viz was never good while we were there but one day they picked an absolutely horrible location with only about 25’ of visibility unless you got below 60 feet. Seems they could have looked for a better site that time.
