Comments Maui has been my easy go to warm water dive vacation spot for many years. After the devastating fire in Lahaina last year, my preferred dive op was temporary unavailable for diving so on my recent trip there I decided to try several new to me dive shops. This report relates to Maui Diamond Sea Sports. They have a very nice 46 foot Newton dive boat with twin diesel engines. It could be a really nice dive platform if it weren’t for the fact, to put it bluntly, that it’s run like a cattle boat. The crew was pleasant enough and efficient though condescending, short on information (don’t worry we’ll do it for you) and cocky. The captain gave a good boat briefing, but dive briefings were barely minimal. They fill the boat with 22 divers, which is very tight for a 2 tank trip on this size boat. Before we boarded, they’d call your name and have you hand your gear bag to someone on the boat, having everyone then stand on the dock. When my name was called I handed my bag over and watched to my surprise as the crew member unpacked my bag, putting my BCD and reg on a tank and just laying other gear around my numbered space. WTF? I wasn’t even allowed on the boat to set up my own gear. Another odd thing is they have clear plastic bins under each seat for your gear, wet and dry. Fins didn’t fit so everyone’s had to be jammed alongside each bin. We weren’t treated as certified experienced divers, just cattle to process. One we were allowed on the boat the 22 divers were broken into 3 groups as you’d expect. However, at the dive site everyone geared up at the same time which was awkwardly crowded. Even with 3 groups, as soon as group 1 was in the water, group 2 entered immediately behind followed by group 3. A few divers had equipment issues which isn’t unusual, but that even created more confusion. Imagine 22 divers in the water at once trying to find their group and dive leaders. It was pandemonium. The dive itself was okay, though with everyone in the water together it was difficult to stay with your group, which turned out to be of no concern. In the water all at once, get out when you are done. The surface interval was pleasant with snacks, water and sodas. Then the boat was moved to another site for the second dive which mirrored the first dive in prep and execution. Moo! There were no accommodations for cameras. After the second dive one trash can on board was filled with fresh water and used by the crew to rinse everything; BCDs, wet suits, regulators, booties, fins & masks. Most was their rental gear. I had to step up before mine was thrown in the soup without being asked. Like a disassembly line. Moo! I won't be going out with Maui Diamond again and don’t recommend them. To be fair, most of the folks on board seemed to really enjoy this dive trip. I apologize for the long rant. If you’ve ever read any of my other reports you know I’m generally complimentary. This is just my 2 cents for your consideration. Take it for what it’s worth. FSAO,
