Comments Our experience was mixed. Kohala Divers is very professional, and the divemasters have years of experience-they could not have been better. We did three days of two-tank boat diving. We could effectively stay down as long as we wanted. The divemasters worked hard to find things and often did-two large frogfish on one dive was the high point. The drawbacks have to do with the location. The North Kohala coast is reputed to have the best diving on the Big Island. However, there have been two major bleaching events in the last 5 years, so the coral is in bad shape, with lots of rubble. The fish are hanging on, with many species we had not seen before. Still, big fish were rare. The other problem was actually the divers. There are two types of divers here. There are locals who dive a lot and are great, as well as some experienced visitors. There are also a lot of inexperienced divers who are doing one or two days as part of a larger trip-these can be disastrous.
If you are going to the Big Island and plan to dive, you cannot do better than Kohala. However, Hawaii is hard to justify as a dive destination except for the novel species of fish.
The weather was great for us-flat seas and no current. The day after we finished, the wind and waves prevented any diving.
The visibility on our dives as 60-100 feet, but we were told it was less than 20 the day before.
