Comments My wife and I are frequent visitors to the Kohala area of Hawaii Island, and have gone diving with Kohala Divers many times. They generally take divers to Puako and Kohala sites, which vary from reefs with large areas of cover by lobe and finger corals, to moderate cover over coral rubble or lava. Arches and swim-throughs are present at most sites. Animal life is mostly small to medium sized colorful tropical fish, with occasional jacks, barracudas, sharks or dolphins. What I find special are the high percentage of endemics in Hawaiian waters. Turtles are often encountered.

Koahala Divers is based at Kawaihae, and boarding takes place across the street at the harbor, which has plenty of parking. We now use our own gear, but when we rented, the gear was in good condition. The comfortable boat has lots of shade, safety equipment and a marine head. The crew is always very helpful, setting up our tanks, helping us in the water, and helping us back on the boat if needed. Guides know each site well, and are able to show us the unusual species of fish and critters that are sometimes only found in certain places. On this trip, my wife was not able to scuba dive, but could snorkel for a little less cost than diving. This still included a guide, who was able to find an octopus and turtles at the shallow reefs near the boat's moorings.

A few years ago, we got our PADI advanced open water certification there, and we were very happy with our instructor and the training.

We don't do shore diving, but for those interested, either Puako or 49 Black Sand Beach have good entry points.

In summary, I highly recommend Kohala Divers, especially if you are staying in the resorts north of Kona.
