Comments After decades of diving Maui with Mike Severns Diving (Pauline & crew) I decided to try Island Style Diving, owned by Javier & Christina. They purchased Severns Diving and did some nice improvements to the Pilikai; retractable shade over the back of the boat, hot shower when you surface, nice snacks and drinks, etc. They meet at the Kihei boat ramp at 6:30, leave early, & try to return before the wind and white caps make for a rough ride. I did 2 days of diving with them.
Their website has a lot of info about their experience in diving, teaching, and working with divers. They have a great way in dealing with their customers; relaxed, friendly. They try to be sure they provide safe and enjoyable dives. The boat is thoroughly equipped with life raft & jackets, O2, emergency kit, etc.
The first dive is at Molokini (as usual) and then they evaluate the currents & wind, and discuss with the divers where to go next. Christina’s experience in marine biology really shows. She finds all kinds of critters; some so small I couldn’t believe she saw them. We did 2 dives at Molokini; at each end of the island. We saw sharks, eels, lobsters, etc. But on the second dive we saw some of the largest and smallest nudibranchs that I’ve ever encountered. Blue dragon nudibranchs that were about 2” wide & 8-10” long; tiny Pikachu nudibranchs and some other white ones that I can’t remember the name that were smaller than a grain of rice.
Another dive was at 3 anchors; a site that I had never been to. It’s quite interesting as it’s 3 anchors laying across the bottom at about 54’. They are spread apart to form a T and connected by anchor chain. We found all kinds of cleaner shrimp, nudibranchs, and brightly colored juvenile fish. Since it was our second dive, our bottom time was limited, but I wouldn’t mind doing both dives at this site.
After returning to the boat ramp, the crew will rinse off your equipment and soak your wetsuits in a cleaning solution before giving it back to you. I can’t think of anything more they could have done for us. (well, I do miss the sticky buns that Pauline used to provide for snacks, but now I’m being picky) I will definitely dive with them again when we return to Maui.
One of the things I noticed was there seems to be fewer dive boats leaving from Kihei. Ed Robinson’s Diving is no longer & I didn’t see any Scuba Shack boats. But there are a lot more snorkel boats ( the extremely large RIBs) that take people out to explore Molokini and the Maui coast.
