Comments Maui has been my easy go to warm water dive vacation spot for many years. After the devastating fire in Lahaina last year, my preferred dive op was temporary unavailable for diving so on my recent trip there I decided to try several new to me dive shops. This report relates to Dive Maui located on Front Street in Lahaina, next to Snorkel Bob’s. Dive Maui is a small local dive shop who offers boat dives from Specially designed Ridged Inflatable Boat (RIB) or selected shore dives of no more than 4 divers. I chose to try the shore dive at the Mala Pier, led by dive instructor Abbey. There were 4 of us and after gearing up at the shop, took the short walk to the entry point. It’s a bit rocky and Abbey suggested we follow her single file, which we did until deep enough to surface swim before dropping down in 15 feet of water. Abbey led us out along the storm damaged submerged pier, now a living reef. Visibility improved as we got farther away from shore and we started seeing how beautiful this site was. Corals are growing on the old sunken concrete beams, schooling reef fish abound. We saw several resting white tip reef sharks and so many turtles I couldn’t count. The place is a huge cleaning station for them. It was incredible. Max depth was barely 30 feet so we had a nice long relaxing dive. Afterwards back at the shop Abbey helped us rinse our gear and allowed me to store mine there for the next dives. If you go, be sure to ask Abbey to introduce you to Chris Cross, a Yellow Tail Coris who has befriended her. Dive Maui is a small locally owned dive op with a lotta heart and aloha. Give them a try next time you are diving on Maui.
