Comments Almost all of my diving is in and around Hawai'i, and in particular off O'ahu where I live, so take my ratings of coral and fish experiences with that in mind. That being said, I think I do have a good sense of the good and bad in terms of dive shops out here, so hopefully this review will prove helpful.

Operators in Hawai'i cater to crowds as diverse as our tourist base, so picking one that matches a diver's skills and expectations against a shop's offerings can make or break a dive a neighbor island dive trip! I chose B&B Scuba Maui because reviews in Undercurrent and elsewhere noted a high concentration of locals and repeat customers in a full but professionally run boat. I found that and more.

To set the stage, I had been out of the water for four months. I tested my gear, boarded the plane, checked in the night before, and was raring to go. The next morning, I stepped off the boat to wave off my driver and...SPLASH!!! I stepped right into the water. I am sure this got me placed (and CORRECTLY SO!) in the rookie, drunk, or both category. That being said, once I got underwater (following a failure of my autoinflator, which they helped me to simply disconnect), the divemaster gave me my space as our group of four loosely followed him. Furthermore, the crew allowed me to continue to dive my own rig, though they offered me one of theirs, once it appeared that I could control my buoyancy without the autoinflator. I liked that I was allowed the courtesy of doing a bit of my own risk assessment, but that they were also willing to find a way to keep me in the water.

The divemasters, by the way, know the sites cold. I am sure it was no accident we found two whitetips off Molokini and a host of smaller critters off Wailea.

In summary, this is professionally run outfit that manages a tight schedule and a full boat with ease and without ever making customers feel rushed or herded. The crew was helpful and watchful without being heavy-handed. Unlike lots of shops out in Hawai'i, these guys don't over promise. They do, however, deliver on what they advertise - great diving with a good boat and an extremely competent crew. I'll be diving with them again.
