Comments Grenada Dive Trip 2024/10

Grenada in October is not considered the best time of the year for diving. It is the rainy season (though I saw very little). Most web pages seem to recommend Dec-Feb for Grenada. However in the off-season there are some good deals. Our scuba shop signed us up for an all-inclusive trip. Diving (10 dives), accommodations, meals, and alcoholic beverages for a single price. This included transport to and from the airport - less than 15 mins between the True Blue Resort and the airport. It did not include airfare.

The Aquanauts Grenada dive shop offered two morning dives each day and if we wanted afternoon dives with Aquanauts Grenada it was an extra $60 and minimum of 4 people. If we wanted to do the night dive it was offered only on Tuesday or Thursday for $85 and you needed 6 people.

We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and were cordially greeted by the resort staff and the key staff of Aquanauts Grenada. We were briefed on the facilities and offerings and on the dive operations. Generally, breakfast was served starting at 0700 until about 0900 (and at this time you ordered lunch). 0830 was the boat showtime and after the two morning dives, as we were headed back, the boat called the shop who notified the restaurant that we were headed back and they could start preparing lunch. Lunch was available until 3 pm. We were usually back by noon. Your afternoon was free.. The resort has three pools and two bars in addition to the bar in the restaurant. All outdoors.

It was pretty much concierge diving. When you went to the boat your BC was on a tank, your weights were kept under the bench. Your other gear was kept in a mesh bag (yours or one provided by the shop). When you finished diving you took your regulators with you and your gear that was left on the boat was put in a mesh bag and the staff rinsed and hung it up to dry. You could drop your wetsuit in the rinse tank and they would pull it out and hang it to dry. The gear was locked up in an area where it could dry. You could run a shop tab to pay for additional dives, gear, shirts, etc and they invoiced you electronically. The next morning your gear would be on the boat ready for nitrox testing and then set up. The crew was ready to help with any/all assembly.

Similar to the scuba shop you could run a tab with the resort for items purchased at the store, or massages, etc.

The air conditioned rooms were nice and included a microwave, stove top, small refrigerator and a few dishes, glasses, cups and silverware. Access to the room was by using an electronic tag on the door. The tag, a wristband, was waterproof but they recommended that you not take it on dives because it was expensive to replace if you lost it. Several of our divers wore their wristbands. .

Diving

Each dive day started at 0830 and the boat ride out was 15-30 min. Each dive was approximately 55 min and there was always a minimum 40 minutes surface interval. If you presented a nitrox certification you got nitrox for no additional charge. The NITROX mixtures, tested in front of you by the DMs, ranged from 29.4 to 31.3 over the five days.

The divemasters and boat captain that we had were very good. Usually one DM led the dive and one DM followed and kept us in sight. They let us wander about and look for ourselves or we could hang with them as they continually pointed out things to see. In my opinion there were not a lot of fishes to see and they were usually small. We did see several types of eels and a few lobsters and on the night dive we saw large turtles. We were taken to see two wrecks. Whether by planning or climate we did several drift dives. I only remember returning from the dive to the original boat location once. One of the DMs stated that due to the full moon the currents were quicker/stronger. On a couple of dives the current seemed to be very quick and it was hard to slow to get an opportunity to look and/or take pictures. One of our dives was the underwater sculpture park. The less than 50 feet of visibility detracted from the event. It is a dive of less than 20 feet.

The whole dive/vacation package is attractive and I might consider doing it again. If I just evaluate the diving I would not make a return trip.
