Comments I've been diving Rangiroa many many times during my last 12 years, expecially Tiputa Pass.
THE CENTER RAIE MANTA CLUB
Usually diving twice a day with Raie Manta Club, the first opened - and so far the best - dive center on the island.
They use to schedule 2 or more dives per day in relation to the divers certification level and number of divers; pick up is also available anywhere on the island.
The dive center is quite small but very well organized and managed by Robert who makes the diving safe and exciting along with others - kind, helpful and skilled - dive masters and instructors.
A nice patio is also on site with table and seats for talking after the dive or sip a warm tea; office is a small area close to a place where you can store your equipment.
Franch, english and german are the languages spoken in the center.
A short walk to the boat, a Zodiac big enough to load 8/10 divers + Maco, the captain who knows Rangiroa currents like his hands.
Yves Lefèvre the owner, a well known underwater scuba instructor and guide around the world, felt in love with this island and founded this center in the Tuamotu back in 1985; he has worked on films such as "Le Grand Bleu", "Atlantis" and others.
THE DIVING
A big role for Tiputa Pass plays the incoming or outgoing current, sometimes a big stream that rules the spots to dive.
Raie Manta uses to group the divers in relation to their certification level, always a smart choice; 5/10 minutes ride brings you to Tiputa pass, the main attraction of the area where a huge school of grey reef sharks lives constantly but it is not difficult to see the rare Albimarginatus shark (Silver Tip Shark or Tapetà in polynesian).
Tiger sharks, Mantas, Eagle Rays or Tunas are also common in the pass while December/March is the favorite moment to see the Great Hammerhead (Sphyrna Mokarran), an endangered species.
Barrier reef of any kind like surgeon, trigger and parrot fish, are everywhere, also schools of big barracuda and jacks always are spotted swimming the blu ocean.
THE DOLPHINS
A tipical dive includes also a "dance" with some resident dolphins; they often come so close to the divers that you can even touch and pet them for long time!!
CONCLUSION
In my opinion Rangiroa/Tiputa Pass is a wonderful place to dive if you like "big stuff", good visibility and exceptional encounters (no matter what current you'll find) but most important Raie Manta Club is the center to dive with, for the perfect knowledge of these waters, their diving skills along with kindness and sympathy.
Good waters.
