Comments I am 75 years old with some mobility issues( total knee replacement and some hardware in my back due to a fall). The staff at the resort and the Ra Divers operation were incredible. I received help in getting in and out of my wetsuit, getting into my gear, and getting in and out of the water. Everyone was fully aware of my issues and helped me at every turn. A very big plus for divers who are in my situation.
Fiji is an 11 hour flight from LAX. You arrive at Nadi International and then have a 2-3 hour drive north to the Voli Voli beach resort. It is isolated on a peninsula and not close to any major towns. You can rent a car at the resort if you want to explore the surrounding area. Organized tours are also available. All rooms/suites face the ocean. I had a premium room that was well appointed with AC. The rooms were made up every day.
There is only a small beach area in front of the dive operation. So if you want to take long walks on a beach, this is not the place to be. The dive operation offered our group unlimited shore dives. You need to walk through a rocky shallow area to get to deeper water. The one shore dive I did was too murky to see much.
I was on a full meal package and the food was excellent…portions a bit too big! Alcohol is expensive ie glass of beer for $6US, mixed drinks for $10US and a bottle of wine for around $30US. Service was excellent. The duty free at the airport on arrival has some decent deals if you need your shot of something every day.
Ra Divers is a very professionally run operation. Dive masters, boat captains, and other staff were extremely knowledgeable about the various dive sites and helpful with setting up gear etc…They have at least three high powered boats (with seating inside) that can accommodate up to 12+ divers each. Simple buckets for mask and cameras were available. However if you have a huge camera rig, they do not have the onboard facilities to handle it (from what I saw).
Dive sites including the marine park had very healthy looking corals. I saw mostly small fish, some eels, octopus, one or two lion fish, a rock fish or two, one or two small sharks, and a large school of barracuda. Most dives involved currents and in one case, the currents were very very strong. Several newbies in the group ran out of air near the surface. The most important thing for me was the health of the dive sites…which was generally very good. The captains gave detailed dive site overviews which were generally accurate. After each dive, depth and bottom time were recorded for each diver including the staff.
When you are not diving, get a massage at the spa. Ann and Tully are a very good massage tag team and you will definitely get those sore muscles worked over by very strong hands!
Tipping is always a subject of interest. Two sealed boxes at the reception have slots to enclose your tip for the house staff and dive operation when you leave. These boxes are opened in front of employee representatives, the tips counted and deposited in a bank account at least once a month. At the end of the year, the tips are divided among the staff as a year end bonus. One dive master told me he received anywhere from $600-1000 FJ dollars at the end of the year. When you consider that the average wage is between $4-10FI/hr ($2-5US), that is an important source of income at the end of the year. Many among us also slipped special tips to staff who went out of their way to be helpful.
Overall, I highly recommend Voli Voli/Ra divers. People make the difference and at this resort, customers are treated royally by the staff.
