Comments After the 10 hour trip from San Francisco I was still rather weary. Upon reaching the Nai'a that sensation rapidly evaporated into excitement. The boat was docked in all it's blue splendor at the port of Lautoka and we were ushered aboard by the team that would care for all our personal and dive needs over the next week.
Mike and Bel are the cruise directors and they are a dynamic pair of thoughtful, mischievous and well educated divers, fiercely protective of the reef and the Fijian people and willing to contort themselves any which way in order to accommodate divers needs. Both are highly skilled divers and extremely knowledgeable about the local biology of the reef and it's inhabitants. Their compassionate and respectful comprehension of Fiji culture is also a welcome addition during the voyage and on village trips. On dives, they are very much at ease in the water and provide as much support as divers require. They never hover, but are always available to ensure optimal safety. Divers can largely explore independently but need to then take responsibility for their deco limits, reef behavior, photo etiquette etc.
The Nai'a dive operation is run extremely well and very professionally, with a clear culture of safety being at it's core. Hyperbaric medical support is not nearby and so this is both understood and appreciated. Since optimal viewing of the soft corals requires some degree of current, some amount of drift diving experience is helpful and novice divers may face some challenges. The briefings are detailed and helpful and divers have a clear outline of what to expect when heading into the water. Tank checks and analysis are performed pre dive to confirm O2 levels. Divers then depart on 1 of the 2 dive skiffs which are expertly handled by the staff who can delineate the bubbles of their divers and be nearby to assist.
The dive sites are numerous and tremendously varied offering both soft and hard corals. On our trip we were showered with massive schools of brightly colored small fish forming a kaleidoscope of colors around the divers and on one unforgettable dive, around the feeding mantas who performed for us for around an hour.
There was no such thing as an average dive aboard the Nai'a and surface intervals were spent smiling, reviewing photos, or eating the plentiful snacks.
The boats layout is ideal for divers with a spacious preparation area to dress and get ready for the coming dive. The adjacent photo deck accommodates 6-8 "big rig" photographers comfortably with good storage and charging capabilities for all in both US and Fijian/Australian outlet configurations.
The cabins are plush and comfortable, with a clean and welcoming shower at the end of the day as well as AC.
Food is abundant and well prepared. Forget about dieting; it's not going to happen. The meals cater to anyone and everyone's personal preferences and is accomplished splendidly. For vegetarians especially there was a huge gourmet range of meals throughout the day and it far exceeded the abysmal pasta and rice combinations we had experienced on other boats.
The crew cannot do enough for the divers and are devoted to helping in any way possible.
Overall, the ambiance aboard the vessel was superb. Mike and Bel are excellent hosts and the sense of teamwork, safety and support aboard the Nai'a is palpable and truly professional. This is a true divers boat that is characterized by an all embracing ambiance of respect for the environment, sharing of knowledge, safety and overall enjoyment. You couldn't want for more.
