Comments Although the reosort has the Costeau legacy (Jean-Michel, son of Jacques) and we had heard from other non-diving prior guests that the resort was beautiful and luxurious, and family-friendly, we had not heard or read much about the diving at the resort prior to deciding to go there. After q quick flight from Nadi International Airport on the main Fijian island of Viti Levu, we were picked up by a resort van and driven a short distance to the resort on the island of Vanua Levu, situated on Savusavu Bay. From the moment we entered the grounds, it was obvious that this was a unique and beautiful eco-resort, with spacious magnificently maintained grounds and facilities. We stayed in a gorgeous ocean from bure, which was a short walk to the reception and dining facilities, pool and dive operation. On our first night there, we listened in to a slide show for a group of youngsters who were completing their week-long oceanography "immersion" course. We could see immediately that this was a special place for learning about the ocean while enjoying the amenities.
Now for the diving-most of the dives we did were a very short distance from the resort, with modern, well maintained boats and a a very dedicated, helfpful and knowledgeable staff, and excellent staff to diver ratios. The dive sites we went to on the first 2 days were quite beautiful, but not spectacular. However, on our third and last day of diving, conditions were favorable for the boats to go to the Namena Marine Reserve, which is about a 40 minute boat trip from the reserve. The beauty and biodiversity of this underwater reserve deserves the reputation it has. Not only were the corals magnificent, but we saw alarge variety of both small and big fish, including sharks, turtles, schools of dog tooth tuna and lots of Trevallies. Conditions were calm and the water crystal clear. On the way back, we were treated to watching a Pilot Whale.
Although both the resort prices and dive fees were on the high side, we felt we got what we paid for. Although the reosrt had daily excursions to cultural and scenic areas, we were too busy enjoying the diving every day to take advantage of these activites.
