Comments Having gone liveaboard and shore diving all S. Pacific, added Fiji to the list. Beqa Lagoon is offshore Pacific Harbor—a 3+ hr car/van ride from Nadi followed by 45min boat shuttle. Fully inclusive as there are no other “visitor” resorts, shops, restaurants etc on the island. Beqa Lagoon Resort arranges all local transport—no issues there, quite accommodating.
1. Resort: Very nice with comfortable “bure” (bungalow) in various settings. I had a garden bure—more secluded. All the amenities—good a/c, good hot water + pressure, well serviced. Limited pay for wifi but it is on a secluded island! Remember— lush tropical island so bring and use lots of sunscreen and insect repellent (a must). Menu while limited and different each day had plenty of variety and quality excellent. Optional entertainment (e.g. fire dancers) each night. Excellent value overall.
2. Diving: “Mother Nature” intervention = mixed. When cooperative (sunny, calm)—beautiful, easy dives. When angry = lots of rain, wind and current. One day we couldn’t dive due to conditions, but they worked in extra dives to compensate. Dive operation excellent and adapted accordingly. Oct is the “wet/dry” season transition. Rented BCD/Reg.—both new and quality. Boats designed for diving in local conditions and staff very knowledgeable and accommodating.
3. SHARK Diving: THIS is the top reason to dive Beqa Lagoon Resort. Well managed + regulated, safe (as one can be in natural conditions) shark dives. Multiple, BIG tiger and bull sharks really close! Lots of smaller species (lemon, nurse, reef) but they make way for the big fish! While I’m naturally not a fan of “shark feeds”—given over fishing, and that the Bega Lagoon is a protected area—keeping the sharks lured to the area provides safety from fishing for the sharks, income for the locals (tourists!), and a fantastic opportunity. There is a surcharge for the shark dive, but reasonable.
4. Other Diving: Lots of corals, reef fish—nice sites. Noticeably missing—Sea Turtles and Large Fish. A result of lack of enforcement of marine protection regulations in Fijian territorial waters. Though illegal, dive staff told us turtles still widely hunted and consumed. Ironic that the unofficial “mascot” of Fiji is the sea turtle, yet in 6 days of diving I saw 0. Only 2 large tuna at the shark feed…
5. Overall: Go for the shark experience and value –nice place at a very reasonable rate comparatively. Book early because they sell out (I had to adjust my plans to accommodate bure availability). As a single traveler, I found the resort & dive operations very accommodating providing quality personal service. With the exception of one other couple, all other customers were part of big dive groups (from USA, Australia) which also have their needs and can crowd. I only was able to use Nitrox once--not sure enough tanks after groups pre-reserved. No boat diving on Saturdays as that is group transfer day and the dive boats are used as shuttles (though there is a House reef w/unlimited access from shore and a very nice pool). Consider upon arrival (esp. after a long journey to get there) spending first day/night at a resort in Denarau Island (near Nadi Airport) to break up travel.
