Comments During our stay at Garden Island the ownership of the resort and dive shop changed, which probably caused some of the problems with the dive shop. Five days of diving and I had four different dive masters and only one was competent. Most of the dive sites have a strong current (think Cozumel's Barracuda Reef) on top of the reef, but much less current along the side and deeper on the reef. Most of the time we would start the dive swimming across or into the current to get to where we would go down. And on my last dive the dive master took us to the top of the reef where we spent 15 minutes swimming into the curent.
Garden Island is an old motel and the rooms are about what you would expect in a motel.
Each room had a ceiling fan, air conditioner, small refrigerator and a decent bed. All of the rooms had a patio or balcony with an ocean view.
There was no television and the internet connection was slow and expensive.
Fiji Gold was $4.50 FJ and Fiji Premium was $5.50 FJ with happy hour from 4-7 offering a $1.00 discount. The food was good with several entrees at lunch and dinner. This maybe a Texas thing, but if they would season the food it would taste better.
At the Zoo reef we saw 10-12 white and black tip reef sharks. On the White Wall, which is unbelievably beautiful, we found a small lionfish, 5 cleaner shrimp and an anemonefish in one hole. We also saw three Humphead Wrasse, Ribbon Eel, Moorish Idol, Clown Triggerfish, Titan Triggerfish and many butterflyfish. There were many fish to see, but the currents made it hard to get good pictures.
