Comments Because I was visiting the island in the off-season and divers were few, the Ft Young Hotel transported me by taxi 25 minutes to Soufriere, a small town on the south end of the island, where I dove with Nature Island Divers for a week.

Although I had some trepidation about diving with a lesser-known and geographically remote shop, I soon discovered that Nature Island Divers is a very competent operation. The shop is very close to Dominica’s best dive sites, so there are no long boat rides. The dive boat was well appointed and although lacking a nautical head, it returned to the dock between dives. In addition to diving, the shop is involved in turtle rescue, coral restoration, and free diving. It also manages a small cafe specializing in local fare.

Dominica is known as the Caribbean’s Nature Island and Soufriere is a small town located in the broad caldera of an ancient extinct volcano, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city of Rosseau. If you are interested in a rustic setting on a lush tropical island, accommodations are available locally in a variety price ranges.

One last point about traveling to Dominica - in 2017, the island was devastated by Hurricane Maria, and now, six years later, they have largely rebuilt, but are still recovering. Ninety five percent of the houses lost their roofs to the storm and island was without electricity, communications, or fresh water for months. The entire population was traumatized, and some abandoned the island, but among those who remained I found many to be open to talking about their experiences with the storm. Their stories are testimonies to human resilience.
