Comments We arrived on a Saturday a few days after Hurricane Beryl which had caused local flooding and landslides.
We spent a few days touring the island top side which is green and gorgeous. It takes forever to get anywhere due to all the switch backs, but the views are fabulous.
Shore diving was not initially available from the resort due to the clever advance preparation of pulling up the deck boards of the dock. By Thursday all the debris was cleaned up and the dock reconstructed. (although the boards were not screwed in, in anticipation of pulling the boards up again for the next hurricane!) The dock has a crank staircase that drops downs into the shallows, making for the easiest of exits. The shore dive in front of the resort provides plenty of entertainment. There are multiple concrete pillars with a multitude of macro life plus deliberately placed ruins of farm equipment providing habitat for juveniles. Not to mention the large naturally occurring boulders strewn about. It was the rainy season and rained heavily a few times which resulted in thermoclines with the fresh water floating above the saltwater.

Nitrox was not available due to equipment damage from the storm. Diving was from one of two custom-built boats Formidable and Zele. The boats were spacious with plenty of shade and had all the required safety equipment, plus safety briefings. There were camera dedicated buckets on board. The boat captain and dive guides provided detailed dive briefings and information about the areas we dove in. The boats traveled south towards the end of the island for two tank dives starting 8:30ish and returning by 12:30ish. Plenty of swim throughs, walls, and ridges. Unusual fish sightings of frog fish and bat fish. Recommend the night dive to one of the local quarry docks. There is a dive at champagne beach with bubbles and hot water seeping from volcanic vents. On one surface interval while anchored near the shore we observed a land slide on the cliff face at the shore just a few hundred feet away. The dive shop staff were very accommodating, despite the logistical issues from the recent storm.

The individual Fort Young Hotel staff are friendly and responsive, however whoever oversees the scheduling of food services made getting a meal as confusing as possible. Some days and times you could eat a meal at the pool, but not every day. Same with the three other dining locations within the resort. The original portion of the hotel is an M.C. Escher print immersion experience. The rooms are old but well maintained. Additionally there is are brand new very modern rooms atop a cliff as well. The hotel was not responsive to questions via email. The hotel is a very short walk to the center of the Capital city, Roseau, a warren of narrow streets, packed with shops, restaurants and residences. The hotel is a block away from the President's residence and the Parliament. The hotel clearly caters to Government business types as well as vacationers.
