Comments Dominica has long been on my list of places to visit. Undercurrent's August lead article was the push I needed to book a trip. I chose Dive Dominica and Ocean's Edge over the reviewed operators due to cost.

Dive Dominica, Ocean's Edge Hotel and Ocean Edge Restaurant are three separate businesses that in spite of being co-located due not offer a combined package. I will review each separately. The staff at all three businesses were friendly and helpful as were all Dominicans that I met.

I booked 9 two dive days. November is low season. On four of those days I had the boat to myself with no complaints from the dive shop. All diving is from moorings. They do not dive in current. The coral was bleached this summer. I noticed colour returning to the corals over the two weeks I was there. Coral coverage is spotty due to there no being enough time between volcanic eruptions for reefs to form. It was a couple of dives before I realized that the coral wasn't covered in brown algae and that the herbivorous fish population was healthy. Diving here is pleasant and easy. Turtles and Dolphins were seen on the surface between dives.

Dive Dominica offers popular, environmentally conscious, Sperm Whale watching trips as well as diving.

My hotel room was large and clean if somewhat spartan. The bed was comfortable. There are no ground level rooms or elevator. The hotel is tired and in need of a facelift. The owners are constructing a replacement nearby.

The restaurant is on the water's edge. The sunsets are spectacular and you can watch pelicans fish. I found the menu and food preparation uninspired. The restaurant is popular with locals.

Outside of hotels and dive operations, Dominica is still a cash based society. I had to get advances on my credit cards because 19 digit bank cards are not accepted at ATM's here. I have not encountered this anywhere else.

The tap water is safe for tourists to drink. No need to buy bottled water.

The capital, Roseau, is a 2 EC$ (1 US$) bus ride away.

If you are interested in nondiving activities, there are lots of hikes, waterfalls and geothermal features. The Boiling Lake Hike is the premiere hike but it is tough.
