Comments It was a family trip to Dominica. From Boston to Dominica is a relatively long and expensive travel. We had to fly to Miami the day before, otherwise we would face to a 45 min transfer time which we thought was to short. Next morning, we flow to San Juan, Puerto Rico. We arrived to the Melville Airport, Dominica in the afternoon. It took an hour drive on an extremely curvy road to Pickard Beach Hotel. The cabins of the hotel are simple wooden airconditioned studio like buildings. The major advantage of this hotel is that many of the cabins are on the beach. I and my wife staid there for a weak. We visited the Cabrits National park and the Indian River (it is only about 1 mile long with a jungle pub at the end). I dove three days with the Cabrits Dive Center. It is a very small operation Run by a middle aged couple. Out of the season (mid June, when there is no cruse ships in the area) I was the only diver (Cabrits go out with a minimum of 2 divers). Luckily, the shop found a local French lady who came along with me so out of the five days I was planning I could dive 3 days. They took us to their usual places, the north shore of the Cabrits Peninsula. The are is about 40-50 Ft deep. Lots of Large barrel, tube and small sponges. Lots of soft corrals -mostly whites sea plums and sea rods. Not many fishes. A couple fish straps, made of chicken wires, holding some eatable size fishes, but also several eels and moray eels, all in bad conditions. The couple who run the dive business made all efforts to please us. At the end of the week, 3 of my other family members arrived and we moved to Rosseau at the south. It took an hour drive from Pickard Beach to Rosseau. The Fort Young Hotel was comfortable, especially as we were after the cruse ship season. In the high season (December-May) it could be very crowded by several large cruse ships anchoring just a 100-yard from the hotel bringing thousand of day visitors to the town. Fort Young has a dive shop, but no dive boat, therefore it organizes some third party boats to pick divers at the hotel (but only in season). Out of the season, we had to hire a taxi every day for a hour drive to and back to the Nature Island Dive Center at Soufriere. This is also a small business. They regularly take divers to spots close to Scotts Head. About 5-10 min by boat. The water here was clearer than at the north. More hard and soft corals, a bit more fish, although also smaller ones. The two ladies who operated the boat were nice, but lacked the ability for much help which was sometimes painful with a large camera. The absolute highlight was when my son proposed his girlfriend under water. I hope they are the next generation of scuba divers.
