Comments After travelling and diving all over the Caribbean for over 30 years, we purchased a home on Curacao in 2015. We chose Curacao for the "total package" of things to do above and below the water. First, let me say my wife and I are in our 60's and, at this point in our lives prefer the combination of easy yet fantastic diving. Shore diving is the most popular type of diving on Curacao. We like it because we are not tied to the boats schedule. Our home is in Coral Estate, right in the middle of the best shore diving on the west side of Curacao. We are one minute from our house reef at Rif St Marie and Coral Divers Dive Shop. We can get a tank and be in the water within minutes of arriving at any time of the day. Coral Divers also offers boat dives every day. We can also get tanks from here and go all over the the west side between Coral Estate and Westpunt. Several of the beaches have dive shops and full service (Porto Marie, Cas Abao, Go West Diving) and others are nearly deserted spots where you won't see anyone else all day. Corals all over the west side are in great shape and reef fish are plentiful. Turtles are common. Southern rays are somewhat common, as well as eagle rays. Once in a while manta rays are spotted. Some of our favorite dive sites are Watamula, the outside reef at Porto Marie, Playa Piscado, Cas Abao, Kokomo Beach. Dive shops are Coral Divers, Porto Marie Sports, B Divin, Ocean Encounters, Go West Diving.
We also love Curacao for the rich culture it offers. Dutch, African, South American are predominant. There is a wide variety of food from fine European dining to roadside stands. The North Sea Jazz Festival attracts top music acts every year. Carnival is one of the best in the Caribbean. This summer the Velas Latinoamerica Tall Ships spent 4 days in the Willemstad harbor. And there is a wonderful community of expats and part time residents from all over the world that make getting to know people very fun. Curacao is a great place to spend extended stays at because there is so much to learn both above and below the water.
