Comments We were with a group of shark-centric photographers on a two-week (12 dive-day) Backscatter trip. The vessel, Avalon III, is large, and was limited to 2/3 capacity, so there was ample room. The boats head 40 miles offshore, but then reposition only a couple of times, with dive sites served by pangas. Cabins are fine, food was great; crew and dive op excellent. Scent boxes were used on almost every dive to bring in silkies and reef sharks. The reefs, long known as pristine, suffered terrible bleaching in 2023. We had a nice tour of Havana before heading to Jucaro Port, a seven-hour bus ride on a comfy coach. Batteries, and a lot of them, were charged in the lounge; devices could be charged in cabins. We had numerous lovely skiff rides through beautiful mangrove islands. We hope to revisit Havana and mourn the apparent profound compromise of another stellar Caribbean reef system.
