Comments Xcalak is at the end of the road. a fishing village 5 miles north of the border with Belize. My first visit there took 3 hrs from the main road along a sand beach road with multiple military check points. Things are different now.

The Reef was at one time pristine with numerous Tarpon and other fish.
It was also the primary departure for Chinchurro.

The Reef life is still plentiful with many more Tarpon and often siting's of Manatees. The coral is average to poor depending on the dive site.

We dove with XTC who have a high level diving and training operation, if not a little expensive compared to Mahahual. There were multiple DM's in training on most dives. One Instructor was exceptional, a Malaysian women who said she was raised on a boat as part of the Migrant Boat people, extreme knowledgable and able to find pinsized nudibranchs. Another, a British Technical Instructor that lived in Tulum was very amusing and informative. He had a student on our dive boat.

I missed a second trip to Chinchorro with XTC due to other obligations.

Here again the sargasso is piled deep on the beaches. Once you get past it the diving can be good and worth the experience.
