Comments I had a quick sidemount training class in the U.S. However, recognizing I did not have enough skill or experience and that I’d be “that guy” holding everyone up from getting in the water on dive trips, I decided to take some more training in a more sidemount familiar area. I looked around and found a highly recommended place called “Under The Jungle” in Quintana Roo. With that in mind, I flew with me to Cancun and headed south to the dive shop where I had reserved four days of sidemount training in a cenote.

Under The Jungle focuses on sidemount for cave diving. Before I arrived, I told them that I’d done that and was not interested in caving, rather I just wanted to improve my sidemount skills and gain experience for recreational diving.

The training was one on one, and we started each day with practice in the classroom. After that, we headed to the cenote and did everything in the water. Lily, my instructor was great!

Under The Jungle has very precise ways of doing things for good reasons. Even how a clip is held and attached to a D ring was drilled into me. This is for safety and so it gets in my muscle memory. They had to redo my wing and harness adjustment and add a few clips and other things here and there.

We spent the next four days going over how to put on and take off the tanks in the water, how to drop a tank and swim with one, switching regulators, how to share air, and particularly how to distribute my weight. (I was wearing a full 7mm wetsuit with close to 20 pounds of lead).

We used AL80 tanks whereas most Florida schools use steel. Both work of course, but I wanted aluminum becasue that's what most recreational dive operations use.

All in all, a great place to learn sidemount with fantastic instructors.
