Comments Sept. 1st started an 8-day stay at Casa Mexicana; nice big room, really comfortable bed, clean, flat-screen t.v., mini-fridge, safe, hot water could be get really hot, AC was fine, wifi served fine (I wasn't streaming much video). Good location; near the waterfront, souvenir shops and places to eat. Maybe 15 minute (?) walk to the Mega supermarket, 5 minutes to Tres Pelicanos dive shop. Good breakfast buffet included - starts around 7 a.m.

Dive 4 dives/day till 2 morning dives the last day, so 26 dives/day. Afternoon trips are contingent upon 2 booked in advance or 3 last minute, but every trip went. Cozumel has a variety of coral topography and decently fish; saw black, yellowfin, 1 Nassau (& I think 1 tiger) grouper, several nurse sharks and green moray eels, sea turtles, plenty of schools of grunts, more ocean trigger fish than I've ever seen, splendid toadfish, even some out-of-season eagle rays and some reef sharks (one dive). Saw dolphins on a surface interval.

Meet at dive shop at 7:45 a.m., soon transported to marina, board boat (liked the Skinny Shark; nice and wide), 2 tanks in the morning, dropped for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours at the Money Bar for lunch, picked back up in the afternoon, 2 tanks, back to hotel around 6 p.m., give or take 30 minutes. I dove 100-cf AL tanks (fills good but not to 3,300 PSI, so not a full extra 20-cf, but it's my understanding that's common across a range of dive op.s due to the tank provider - still worth the extra bottom time). My gas consumption is decent, not great; I tended to turn low early, the guide lets you head up on your own, and my average dive time was a hair under 1 hour/dive (with 1st dive cut short as I underweighted myself). Dove nitrox all week. Entries via backroll.

Tres Pelicanos has a sustained strongly positive reputation on Scuba Board, both as a dive op. and for great value package deals with Casa Mexicana, and they offer up to 4 dives/day (not counting night/twilight). Cozumel doesn't lend itself to 4 dives/day like Bonaire or a live-aboard, but it can be done, and while I was wiped out and falling asleep around 8 p.m., I had a fine time. Didn't need to rent a car. Airfare was good value. Overall trip good budget for what I got. My BCD tore up, and they let me use a rental and didn't even charge me!

Highly recommended.
