Comments Isla Mujeres is a great base from which to get in the water with whale sharks. The government strictly enforces rules related to whale shark tourism and safety. No diving is allowed, but the snorkeling is phenomenal. I have made this same trip 3 times. The season is May-September only. The number of boats and snorkel times are controlled. Each person typically has two turns in the water. The guide and boat captain work to position pairs of snorkelers in front of the whale sharks so it minimizes the amount of swimming required to see them. They are incredibly fast! The guides are very skilled.

For this 4 day trip I did 8 or so dives (some days were morning and afternoon two tank dives. The reef dives were average, but diving the underwater museum, MUSA is a treat. I did 4 dives in the museum and got lots of great underwater footage. I did 2 trips to snorkel with whale sharks. It was worth every penny. The whale shark trips came with lunch, including freshly prepared ceviche made on the boat.

There are some better dive sites, but the operators tend to go to the museum and the closer local reefs. Farther dive sites were subject to weather and number of experienced divers. 4 days was more than enough time to see most of what Isla Mujeres has to offer.

At night there are lots of street vendors and excellent taco trucks. There are also numerous restaurants. There are tons of sourvenir stalls with beautiful textiles and leather goods along with the requisite tourist fare. The best souvenir I purchased was a sterling silver whale shark bracelet. I have never seen anything like it. Check out [tasteofisla.com link]. The artist even delivered the bracelet to me in person.

The vibe on Isla Mujeres is more laid back than Cozumel, Cancun and other areas. I enjoyed dinner every night at the Mayan Beach club. It is an excellent location to watch the sunset and swim. I stayed at the hotel suites above the dive shop. They were clean and spacious. The view was of the street, but they were very convenient to the dive shop. I would stay there again.

The beach is sandy and and an impossible shade of blue. I loved every minute just swimming after diving was done. Can't wait to go back.
