Comments Cozumel still has great drift dives, formations, swim throughs, sea horses, great visibility and sponges but the hard coral is bleached out and there weren't many large schools of fish, sharks or turtles. This may have been partially caused by the massive flotilla of dive boats and divers who seem to come from all over to converge on the reefs. The island itself is a tourist trap for cruise ships, the town is inundated with cruise ship passengers when ships are in and the shop hawkers are everywhere. The Iberostar's colorful bungalows are located on spacious, manicured gorgeous gardens complete with peacocks and pink flamingoes, a photo op around every corner. With some sprucing up the rooms could move up a star but the sloppy paint jobs and condensation leaking from the bathroom ceiling are a distraction. The staff is super friendly, professional and eager to help. Hotel activities reminded me of an average cruise ship with a rah rah "cruise director" yelling nonstop enthusiastic encouragement for guests to join in the ongoing hoakie games. Night time is also high decibel with a loud band blaring until late. My conclusion is that this hotel is targeting a younger crowd, one that prioritizes busy busy busy over laid back quiet relaxation. Dressel Divers is excellent in every way: super friendly, organized, caring, professional and FUN! Well staffed dive boats, good quality rental gear and a good dive shop set up complete with an attached area for briefings and paper work make it feel much less like a people factory, even though they process a large number of divers through, they definitely know what they are doing.
