Comments Cozumel can be a great dive destination because it is relatively inexpensive, cheap and easy to fly to, short rides to dive sites, and has a lot of marine life. This was my fourth or fifth dive trip to Cozumel and my third stay at what is now Hotel Cozumel. It was also my third time diving with Dive Paradise. I went in a group of 10 divers from my dive club.

We dove many of the usual locations: Chakanaab Balcones, Villa Blanca, Palencar Gardens, Palencar, Yocab, San Clemente, Virgin Cojones, and Las Plamas. The condition of the coral was disappointing. A lot of the coral was broken and bleached. There were still a lot of fish, lobsters, rays, etc.

On previous trips the coral and sponges were really great. This time the coral and sponges were suffering. We're not sure if the problem was global warming, bad reef selection, or something else. I see that the government is closing some reefs every month to try to improve their health.

Looking at other dive reports on Undercurrent and other web pages, I see lots of favorable reports on the reef conditions. Maybe we were just unlucky, but I'm going to do more research before returning to Cozumel.

Land
My dive club wanted to stay at Scuba Club Cozumel, but they were booked up so we booked with Hotel Cozumel and Dive Paradise.

Food at Hotel Cozumel was "fine." The club decided to do the all inclusive, but my wife (a non-diver) and I decided to have a few dinners in town that were better.

Last Day
Many people in the group had seen the usual Yucatan sites, so we booked a tour with Richard at ToursByLocals to see Tulum from the water. That helped us to avoid the crowds at Tulum. We walked through Ek Balam, a Mayan ruin that is less crowded and neat. We participated in a Chaman purification ceremony. At an open cenote we jumped in, swam and had a good time.
