Comments We stayed at Sunset House as part of a dive group. We had almost 60 people in our group. About 50 divers. The hotel is old but kept up and recently upgraded. Everything except the patio doors that take two people to open and close. The rooms are very comfortable and we had a great view of the ocean from our balcony. The sea wall was maybe 50-60 feet from our balcony. The beds were comfortable and the air conditioning was provided by mini-split units. You controlled the temperature with a remote control. You can get the rooms super cold if you want. It isn’t a real big resort so to walk from one side to the other is only minutes. The walk into George Town is only about 10-15 minutes but there are limited sidewalks so it’s a bit nerve wracking. We took a taxi the night we ate in town. It cost $24US round trip. The town is a typical Cruise ship stop. Lots of overpriced shops and restaurants. Nice enough but there were one to three cruise ships there every day. Didn’t want to be in town before the ships left around 4-5 pm.
The hotel restaurant was in three parts. Outside bar area on the waters edge, indoor restaurant and outdoor dining by the sea wall. All had the same food and everything we ate was very good. It’s a big menu from American to British to Indian food. We tried it all and liked everything. A little pricey but everything on Grand Cayman is. Breakfast was included in our dive package and was table service. Basic breakfast choices served quite quickly so the divers could get ready for the morning dives. Drinks at the bar were very good. Good selection of Cayman beer. Wine selection was just ok. Bring some from home.
The diving via Sunset Divers was excellent. We had two boat dives in the morning and unlimited shore diving at the resort reef. The boats are all in good shape. Our crew was on a Newton. We had 15 divers and 3 crew members. It was a little crowded but very manageable. The other people in our group were on catamaran hull type boats. Dives were led by either the captain or one of the other two divemasters. They would lead you around the reef (or wreck) for about 25 minutes then back to under the boat and let buddy pairs explore on their own until either 60 minutes or 750 PSI in the tank. Most dives were 40-60 feet so an hour was easily reached by most of the divers. Sunset Divers is very conservative but that’s fine with me. If your computer goes into gauge mode due to poor dive management on your part you sit for the day it takes to get back to normal. There is a spare regulator hanging at 15 feet on all dives so if you totally mismanage your air you have air to complete a safety stop.
On two days of our trip there was strong winds and high seas at the resort so the boats were moved to the south end of the island and we were bused (about 10 minutes) to there. The diving on the south end is amazing. Big deep coral formations and lots of very cool swim throughs. Worth asking to be taken there one day.
Overall diving in Grand Cayman is very good. Good healthy coral and good fish life. Not a lot of big fish but plenty of sea life. We saw two spotted eagle rays on one dive and a few nurse sharks. Visibility was always 80 to 100+ feet. Got a little cloudy on the windy days but very clear. On some days there was a pretty good sized swell but no current to speak of.
The house reef was easily dove right from the resort. The famous mermaid statue is right out from the salt water pool/lagoon in about 50 feet of water. There is a small wreck about 250 feet in the direction the mermaid is looking. Then the wall is probably another 50 feet beyond that. Nice coral and lots of interesting fish. Saw a school of Reef Squid each time we dove there. They would come over to check you out. The night divers saw lots of Tarpon. We didn’t see them during the day.
Overall a really nice place to stay and dive. Wouldn’t recommend for non-divers. There is no beach. They have a nice pool though. Seven Mile Beach is on the other side of George Town so you’d need to take a taxi to go see it.
