Comments We completed a bucket list voyage through the Panama Canal on a privately owned 55’ Sailboat with friends. We had stops at Shelter Bay, The San Blas Islands (Guna Yala), and San Andres, Columbia before arriving at Georgetown Yacht Club on Grand Cayman.
This type of transport depends on wind and water conditions and does not allow for specific arrival dates. The reservation desk at Sunset House was extremely helpful and flexible with our arrival dates and adding additional rooms for our friends. We initially thought we’d be there four to five nights before our departing flight home, but ended up staying a full week. Luckily there was plenty of space as the resort was not busy.
We also inquired as to laundry (after three weeks on a boat we needed to have laundry done) and they accommodated us immediately upon arrival with freshly washed clothing within hours.
We planned to dive five of the seven days we were there, to allow for an island tour one day. Next time I’d skip the tour. We did two morning boat dives each day. My husband did one afternoon shore dive which he enjoyed. I was exhausted after our journey and was happy with the morning dives which were a bit early for me as we were to be on the dock at 7:30.
Dive rules were enforced-- All new rules for me. I usually came back with half of the tank left. Dives were pretty pedestrian Caribbean diving, mostly at sites at seven mile beach. Once we went to the south sound which was a very nice change as is apparently not visited often due to swell action. Finally on our last day we were able to dive the north Wall where we saw a couple reef sharks and some rays. Reef fish were not as plentiful as expected; corals and sponges in fairly good shape. We had a couple dives with some fun swim throughs. I loved seeing some spotted drums. Lots of little wrecks to see.
Dive staff were all good. No complaints. I was surprised we set up our own equipment after boarding the boat. (call me spoiled?) We had some experienced photographers diving with us who basically dove their own profile. The rest of us were expected to follow the dive Master until we returned to the boat. We were then allowed to do what we wanted for the last 20-30 minutes. DM waited for all divers to end their dive before boarding.
Rooms are clean and work great for divers, lots of space. Nice beds and bed clothes. We had ocean view rooms which allow you to walk out your slider to the grass area and the swimming pools (one fresh water, and one in the ocean.) Watch sunset from your private patio or from My Bar.
The resort was very quiet during our visit and they only had one boat running although they have four dive boats. Lots of shore divers were in and out of the water all day though.
My Bar is definitely the happening place for locals to chat and have a drink or two at day’s end to watch the sunset. It was very busy over the weekend, but has a steady stream of tourists along with locals for lunch and dinner. We also ate at their Sea Harvest restaurant one evening on their patio and had some excellent Indian dishes. Everything here is very expensive, but they do offer Veuve by the glass. Sunset house is close to "downtown Georgetown" with lots of restaurants and bars.
