Comments This was a REEF trip (yes, we're fish geeks). With 500 dives I was a comparative rookie and certainly so when it comes to fish ID. The Southern Cross group was very prepared to support our work and they were without exception a pleasure to dive with. Mike (head of dive operations) has assembled an excellent team. One of our guides/captains has been there 15 years, and Mike even longer. They know the island, the reefs, and where to go.

It's largely valet diving. Your gear is picked up at your room on the first day and delivered to the boat where it's set up on either air or Nitrox according to your preference. Yes, they check your Nitrox cert when you check in (thank you for doing that). The gas has been checked (usually 32%) and marked on your tank so you can adjust your computer, but there's no issue if you want to do it yourself. Same with gear setup. You can do it yourself if you prefer. They are also very diligent about having you check your configuration before leaving the dock and again once you are in your kit before getting into the water.

They make a point of getting to know you, your kit and your diving. For example, after a couple of days Mike made a suggestion about tweaking my setup to make it more streamlined. We discussed it and sounded reasonable. He made it and said he'd change it back if I didn't like it. I did like it. Thanks Mike! Separately, I had a couple of dive operation questions before arriving. Mike always responded via email within a day. Also very appreciated.

Closest Airport LYB Getting There DFW-GCM-LYB. I spent a few days in Grand Cayman before connecting to Little. Plan your connections! There is no interline agreement for Cayman Airways, so plan to collect your bags in Grand Cayman then check in for your flight to Little Cayman. The weight restrictions are a little different. Be prepared to do some repacking. But I had no issues going or coming. My return was Little to Brac to Grand to DFW.
