Comments This was our 26th trip to Pirates Point and the second of 2022. Needless to say we like it a lot. Our enthusiasm increased even more this year as Susan, the owner, arranged for her aunt to come down from Texas to spend time with my wife, who has Alzheimer’s. This enabled me to go diving. I don’t know of any other dive resort that would be so generous.

The resort only has 11 rooms so you soon get to know everyone. Prior to Covid there were a group of us who came back at the same time every year. This year the Covid disruption ended up spreading the group out so that there were only a few folks who had been there when we were in the past, but that enabled us to make new friends. Beyond the diving the food continues to be a highlight. I always gain about 2 pounds per week and spend the next year getting it off, only to put it back on again on the next visit.

This year was the last for their dive boat, the Yellow Rose III. Their new boat, which is larger, was in Grand Cayman being outfitted when we were there and will be there when they reopen in the fall. They are also replacing the dock during shutdown.

The diving was a particular highlight on this trip. The 2+ years of little diving was good for the reefs and other underwater life. When we were there in February there were an abundance of sharks. The sharks are still there. I saw 5 sharks at Bus Top on my last day of diving (as well as a black seahorse and a pair of green turtles playing). In the past there were generally a few giant anemones until the last couple of years before Covid. This time there were quite a few spread out at a number of sites. There was an abundance of juvenile spotted drum. Pipehorses were in relative abundance. (More pipehorses than pipefish.) There were lots of lobster. At Mixing Bowl there were a couple of big barrel sponges that you could count on to have a resident lobster. There were a few lionfish around. Some dives there would be a couple, while on others none at all. I only saw 1 small lionfish and the claim was made that they had taught the big groupers to eat the little lionfish and that appeared to be true. They also said that the combined resort lionfish hunts were going to be restarted in the near future. All in all, I really enjoyed my 2 weeks of diving and am looking forward to returning next year.

UW Photo Comments They have a camera table on the boat as well as a big plastic bin with fresh water. At the resort they have a fiberglass sink dedicated to camera rinse. For the most part I was the only photographer on the boat so I had no real issues. I could generally put my camera in the rinse at the resort and let it soak all afternoon.
