Comments I live in Chicago and often like to find warm weather diving destinations that do not require a flight connection. Grand Cayman is perhaps the best of these as it is a four hour direct flight from ORD. I stayed at a friends condo on 7 mile beach and reserved four days of two tank diving w/LTD. A nice feature of scheduling w/LTD is that the two tank afternoon dives offer the same profiles as the morning dives, meaning you can sleep in, get picked up at 12:30 and still dive the north wall (dive #1) and then the shallower reefs ~60' for dive #2. A van picked me up for the 5 minute ride to the harbor. The staff set-up my gear and switched tanks between dives and drove me home afterwords. LTD has a fleet of very comfortable Newton dive boats and a very friendly & experienced staff of mostly British dive instructors. Evidently, the seasonal wind pattern during the winter months causes rough seas near the north wall, but by late April, these winds calm down, which allows dive boats to start diving the sites along the north wall. "Tarpon Alley" was particularly noteworthy. As advertised, a school of large tarpon were still--in formation--inside a large channel, but the real treat here was that three ~6' reef sharks hung around for 20 minutes of the dive. Additionally two eagle rays and one large roughtail sting ray were also spotted. The corals look quite healthy here. The 32% Nitrox mix that LTD offers allows for nice bottom time for all of these sites. Very well run dive shop.
