Comments Little Cayman: Lots of Fish and Live Coral

Undercurrent’s feature review in July 2022 [undercurrent.org link] was a big factor in our group of four friends heading there in February 2023. We found that report accurate. Below is my supplemental info to that article.

DIVING AND REEFS. The reefs have more live coral cover and varied hard corals than most Caribbean sites; maybe the best, except for Jardines de la Reina, Cuba. There are plenty of reef fish schools and aggregations and good macro. And some of the usual pelagics – reef sharks, turtles, rays. One quibble: not as much species variety of fish and inverts as some places (eg Belize atolls). Some good walls and a few dives with Cozumel-like formations and swim-throughs leading into the blue, along with other dives on patch reefs and mini-walls. The briefings are elaborate, with a white board.

DIVE OPERATION. Four Newtons. I’m not fond of 20-diver cattle boats, but here it went pretty well because it is well-organized and most divers are experienced. Everything ran on time and everyone on staff seemed competent. We experienced four DMs, all competent and helpful. I want a good creature scout, and on that scale, the DMs varied from good to not-so. My first stage failed even before my first dive, and they helpfully loaned me a reg for the week. The schedule is the usual 2-dive mornings and one after lunch.

It is about 25 min average to the sites, including to the Bloody Bay Marine Park area, so the dive-day is a tightly scheduled (don’t plan on a leisurely lunch). By 4 pm I was back for a rinse-off, then the hot-tub, then to the bar.

On our first day we heard that it has to be “lake calm” for a night dive, and that there would be no night dive this week. One day was quite windy (giving the sea “texture” according to the dive manager); I took the day off, rented a motor scooter and toured and birded the small island (population 161).

Every dive operation these days seems to want to label themselves “Valet Diving;” it’s more-or-less true here.

FOOD, LODGING, VIBES. The food is excellent. Top quality and lots of choices for every meal. Amazing, considering the isolated location. Buffet style only. Guests would be seen surveying the desserts and the various entrée and side choices before grabbing a plate.
The rooms are motel-style and newish and clean. Newish means reliable AC, hot water, enough room for gear.

The bar and pool area is the social center, as expected. We found compatible folks to compare dive notes and maybe play cards with. And collect bug-bites. At least half of the clients here are repeat visitors, so it has a bit of a clubby vibe.

PRICE. By my standards, it’s a bit pricy. But, it does live up to its advertising. No nickel-and-diming or $ surprises. Nitrox $12/dive. And tipping of course.

TRAVEL NIGHTMARES. This Undercurrent article [undercurrent.org link] is accurate. Our group had problems with Cayman Airways’ operation to Little Cayman (we missed our flights out of Grand Cayman, and had to rebook), and repeat divers take it for granted. The resort manager claimed that Little Cayman will acquire a third plane to service the sister islands, to ease the pain.
