Comments Super easy nonstop flight from Orlando to Grand Cayman. Upon arrival, taxis were plentiful and well organized. HOWEVER, they were very expensive. The trip from the airport to my hotel was $55 for a an 8 mile trip. I did meet a great taxi driver, Henry who I was able to call for my return to airport trip. He even stopped at a few shops so I could buy souvenirs. This little jaunt cost me $75! If I felt more confident, I would have rented a car. They are very inexpensive, but be aware driving is on the left.

I stayed at unit 4 of the Lighthouse Point Dive Resort, not to be confused with the Lighthouse Point Residences next door. The 2 bedroom unit had a king bed in one room and two twin beds in the other room. Each had its own bathroom. An outdoor patio was accessible from the livingroom and master bedroom. Every conceivable appliance was included; Nespresso machine, stove, oven, dishwasher, washer/dryer, pots, pans wine glasses etc. There were games, cards, candles, species ID books, tourist books and 3 large flat screen TVs. Air conditioning was perfect. Everything was modern, clean and well organized. This was one of the nicest units I have ever rented. Each night was around $299.

Overall, Grand Cayman was nice. The expense of food, taxis, accomodations and diving was higher than other places. I wish I had known I could have brought food into Grand Cayman. It would have helped reduce the large grocery bill I incurred.

Diving with DiveTech was outstanding. One of the dive shops is on site at Lighthouse Point Dive Resort and I was able to do several shore dives from this location. For boat dives, I was picked up each morning and taken to the boat. Very efficient and friendly service. The divemasters and crew were excellent. I appreciated the fact that I was expected to set up my own gear and test my own Nitrox tank. Crew handed me my camera and helped me walk back to my seat to remove my tank. Shore dives were great and the divemasters allowed me to dive longer than an hour. Twice I did 85 minute dives.I rented most of my gear and found it to be in excellent condition.

The area of Grand Cayman where I was staying did not have a sandy beach such as that on 7 mile beach, so my enjoyment of the water was limited to viewing it from the shore or during diving. Accomodations on 7 mile beach were higher than where I stayed, so I understood that beach access would be limited.

The coral formations were spur and groove and lots of swim throughs. There are lots of sponges and a fish. Eagle rays and Southern stigrays were common sights. I saw one turtle in 5 days and typical caribbean fish. The highlight was diving the Kittiwake wreck. It is in excellent condition and made for spectactular video during the swim through and swim over.

I highly recommend DiveTech. They run a top notch dive operation, focused on customer service. Their two locations have shore diving available and restaurants on site. Very convenient and everyone is very nice. The boat is very spacious, well appointed for safety and comfort and has room for dry bags. Water entry is by giant stride off the back of the boat.

Other stuff...Sunsets and dinner at Vivo (vegetarian/vegan and seafood), Cracked Conch and Nova (at DiveTech's Cobalt Coast location) was outstanding. However, I preferred to cook in my apartment because I can't stomach paying $29 for a hamburger. Did I mention food is expensive here?

I am glad I visited Grand Cayman. I was very impressed by the quality of the shore and night diving. Some of the reefs we visited were great, but the majority were fairly average. Wrecks and night dives were the highlight of the trip for me.

UW Photo Comments The boat has a table where cameras can be placed. Easy to change batteries and lenses from my seat or the dry table. Fresh water hose is available on the boat and there is a fresh water rinse tank at each of the dive shops.
