Comments I'm not going to do a long write-up as there are many on Bonaire. Plaza and Toucan Divers are great but I wanted to bring one issue which caused conflict with our non-divers (wives). Everyone knows that Bonaire has a long reputation for petty theft of dive vehicles. As long as you don't leave anything in the truck and leave all windows and doors open, there's not much worry. That said, this trip had a new wrinkle. Upon arriving at the Plaza Resort at 11pm, my dive buddy and I went into the lobby to register. We left our wives with the rental truck to watch the bags. While we were filing out the registration forms at the counter, a commotion was heard outside with the blaring of a car horn. We went out to find our wives frantic because three local (drunken) men had approached the truck and tried to take my wife's backpack. She kicked him away and started laying on the horn. Meanwhile, a second man grabbed a my friends backpack out of the bed of the pickup. His wife was able to wrestle it away from the man. They ran off as people came out to see what was going on. Is this a step up to a more violent Bonaire? This all happened right in front of Plaza'a lobby. When is the government going to crack down on the theft issue?

Theft issue is prime reason I have never made a side trip to Bonaire on my annual trip to Aruba. Seems to me the government just looks the other way. Why would you go to a place EXPECTING to get robbed?

Vote with your wallet, why spend money in a place where you feel uncomfortable? It is a small island with limited access and population of less than 20,000. The locals need to get serious about crime and the impact on their #1 revenue - Tourism. Been to Curacao 3 times and victim twice. Never again.
