Comments Our group of about 18 divers from Wateree Dive Center in Columbia, SC returned for another New Years trip to Bonaire. The main dive pier was damaged in a storm so the boats left from another older pier on the property. The temporary dive lockers were pretty poor, all in a small room that last year was a health clinic room. The staff was working on more good lockers, and we secured one for the last few days. The repairs for the pier are apparently bogged down in a bureaucratic Morass. We went a year ago and Covid shut us down midweek and 11/44 had to remain behind in Bonaire for up to a week until they tested negative. Fortunately that was in the past. We could not leave our room or even sit on the porch. Totallly frustrating! The fireworks were noticeably less than previous years.
The hotel is older, but they are making renovations. The staff is stable and we were recognized by many workers. The breakfast buffet is good, and we ate once at the Chibi Chibi and another night at Pure Ocean on the property.
The diving was good, with the corals in somewhat better shape than a year ago. There were a good many juveniles and small critters, a few spotted Eagle rays, Cubera snappers, a few turtles, but not a plethora. Lionfish seemed to be well controlled for the most part, except at Petrie’s Pillar, where there were 6.
The dive team is good. The schedule for the divemasters is different, with a different group on the first and last days. For us. Denise, Rudd, Laurel and Orlando were excellent as always. We really miss Serge the former longtime dive operations manager and Alvin is retiring soon.
The “new” manager has been on the job for only a short time. The last two to follow Serge didn’t last long.
Be sure to make reservations for restaurants in town early. Capriccio’s is still our favorite.
Cuba Compagnie was good, but the manager was arrogant and when we asked for 6:00 pm reservations 2 days before, he said “OK, but you have to leave by 7:30 pm. “. Don’t worry, we were out in a hour. Really!
All in all, a good return trip to a place we’ve been a total of 24 times.
