Comments This was an extended family trip where I could do some diving so I brought my gear. It wasn't worth it. I booked 6 dives with this dive shop (not part of the hotel) but only did 4. Bermuda is loaded with wrecks in various conditions and one of them (the North Carolina) was pretty good, but the other three we went to weren't impressive. The last one, the Virginia, there's no wreck left at all, but at least the lava topography is cool. That was probably my favorite dive.

The coral is abundant, but only a few types and not much color variation. All beige or yellow hues at least without color correction. My dives were all on the west side of the island, so perhaps its different on the other side. Not a huge amount of fish of any kind compared to other dive destinations.

The dive boat was small and pretty packed. They did an afternoon dive each day so they rushed the morning 2 tank run. It was like a Navy seal or parachute drop. All gear had to be put on while the boat was moving (which stunk on the first day when the we had 2 to 3 foot chop) and you had to jump in as soon as the boat stopped. Service on the boat was not great. Only the shop manager and the technical dive instructor were customer focused - but they were truly top notch and I'm glad I got one on the first and the other on the second.

Dive planning wasn't great either as the groups weren't spaced well underwater. We kept running into each other and on the second dive we lost a diver who attached himself to another group by mistake as we mingled. Very understandable, but then it happened again on the second day so I concluded it was just bad guide coordination. This is one of the reasons I dumped my third day of diving. The other reasons were lack of coral diversity and cramped boat conditions.

Overall, not a disaster by any means. Any dive everyone walks away from is a good one, especially if its a new experience. That said, I wouldn't book Bermuda for a dive trip on its own.

Last note, the water there is very salty as its part of the Sargasso Sea. I needed 2 to 4 pounds more than normal depending on gear selection. The guides said this was normal.
