Comments This was our second trip in two years. Last year, we arrived just after a November hurricane; this year, also November, there was more rain in two weeks than in the last 30 years. After the 1.5 hour boat ride to the island, we were advised to take off shoes and socks and roll up our pant legs; to get to our rooms we had to walk through ankle-deep water.

But the food is still excellent, they gave us all umbrellas, the outdoor showers were still hot due to back-up generator power (usually solar), and we didn't miss any dives.

Mostly 3 dives a day. Everyone voted to skip the night dive because every dive was similar to a dusk dive. By the end of the week, there was 10-14 feet of fresh water on top of the salt water, forming a halocline that was quite chilly. The lighting below was interesting and seemed to confuse a few of the usually night-time critters. We saw so many whitespotted toadfish, endemic to Belize, that the dive guides remarked on it. The coral is in rough shape, but the soft corals and sponges are fine.

Saw quite a few eels swimming out and about. The sharks are really into eating speared lionfish--we had up to 5 sharks at once. There were decent sized groupers of different varieties. We dove the Blue Hole on one of the two mostly rain-free days and were able to see the Blue Footed Boobies nesting. Make sure you wear mosquito repellant for Half Moon Caye, as you don't realize you're getting bit until two days later when your entire back starts itching.

We had a great time and felt that the rain actually enhanced the trip. Our group leader was Tina from divetrip.com. Now that we're retired from our own scuba business, we do frequent trips with her; she's a great group leader.

Skiffs had no sun protection, but boat rides were usually short, 5-10 minutes. The ride to the Blue Hole was on a large, comfortable boat with a head. Only half our 20+ person group went, so it was quite roomy; the rest of the group dove 3 dives close to the resort.

After arriving back at the dock, we were picked up by Crystal Paradise Resort and spent 5 days touring with Eric, mostly in the rain, which helped create some great stories to be told.
