Comments This was our second stay at Isla Marisol in Glover’s Reef. Our prior visit was about 2 yrs ago. Then, we thoroughly enjoyed the diving and experiencing a healthy reef system in the Caribbean so we wanted to make a return visit. It seems that Caribbean diving is becoming so degraded that it keeps getter more difficult to find enjoyable diving in the Caribbean.
Isla Marisol sits on a tiny island out about 26 miles from the coast of Dangriga and the boatride takes about 1.5hr to get out there. The resort is very rustic – a couple of steps above camping. They use solar and a generator to provide energy for the resort. Isla Marisol is so peaceful, comfortable, friendly, and the food is delicious. It is off the beaten track, which is what makes it special and the diving still very good. Night skies are incredibly black and bejeweled with so many stars you’d never imagine.
On this second visit to Glover’s, the diving was even better than the first visit! During a week’s diving, we saw schools of what you’d hope to see, including creole wrasse, snappers, grunts, bar jacks; but also schools of porgies and chubs; angels, triggerfish, filefish, trunkfish, boxfish, hamlets; morays, nurse sharks, lobsters, unfortunately quite a few lionfish; even several tuna, barracuda, tiger and nassau groupers; nice corals and sponges; quite a few hawksbill turtles and even several spotted eagle rays. Wow- all that was great to see!
But we also encountered a pod of dolphins, a loggerhead turtle and even a whale shark at different dive sites! Say what?! Yes, really! That all made for some great conversations topside, and just goes to show you that you just never know what you may see.
