Comments Blackbird is in the central portion of Turneffe Atoll, off the coast of Belize City. The isolated resort offers both SCUBA and snorkel diving and provides full meals and services. The staff is gracious, friendly, and well supervised. The overall experience is excellent.

SCUBA
Turneffe Reef is central to the Mesoamerican Reef. The underwater environment is among the best in the Northern Hemisphere. Caribbean tropical fish and corals abound, and the topography offers steep walls, grass-covered flats, and sandy expanses. Sharks, turtles, rays, and large groupers are common visitors on most dives.

Blackbird has several dozen sites within a few minutes boat ride of their pier. The sites vary from walls to sandy flats. Guided groups of no more than 8 divers spend 45 – 60 minutes underwater. The guides generally allow divers to do their own thing with few restrictions. Divers are asked to alert the guide at 700 psi (50 bar) and return to the boat after a standard safety stop with 300-500 psi (35 bar). Divers are expected to be responsible for their air and depth management and to dive safely. The guides are alert and quickly respond to potential issues.

While getting into the water is an easy giant stride from the boat, the adopted system of a crew member putting fins on your feet as you stand at the entry is cumbersome. The design of their four boats forces this method. It could be improved with grab points higher on the boat structures. I found that the ladders for getting out of the water were difficult with my tank on. There was no high point which allowed the use of upper body strength.
