Comments Several very lovely things about Guanahani's operation and dive sites include 1. lots of sharks without actually being a shark feeding operation. Caribbean Reef Sharks and Blacktips. Seen on every dive and frequently multiple were visible at a given time. They would approach about 20 feet and then veer off. 2. Excellent visibility with over 100 feet on most dives although some sites were a little less. 3. No currents. 4. Fairly good coral although this varied more than usual between dive sites. Some reefs had extensive forests of soft coral and others seemed mostly barren. 5. Some large pelagics including Atlantic Manta Rays, Tuna, and Wahoo. Mantas were seen by all divers on both our boats. 6. Small reef fishes were abundant on some dives. About as many as you will ever see. On other dive sites, they were essentially absent. We could not figure out why and the operator had no explanation. It did not appear to be due to Lionfish as they were essentially absent.
The dive operation has three boats. The two we used were 40+ feet twin diesel inboards with flat dive decks, good tank racks, and ladders. They had onboard water, camera rinse tanks, excellent sun shades, a head, onboard DAN safety equipment, ship-to-shore communication, and easy on-off at the dock. The longest run to usual dive sites was 10 minutes. Equipment storage between days is a combination of leaving on the boat and/ or using a secure storage building next to the dock. Cylinders are filled on the boats with a whip so your cylinder remains in the same spot all week.
The Riding Rock Inn is an old-time diver and deep sea fisherman's resort about 1/4 mile from the dive shop and dock. Rooms are basic but clean and with daily maid service. Water is safe and drinkable but has a distinct local flavor. Plenty of hot water for showers. Food is excellent and plentiful with patrons selecting a limited buffet for the next meal at the time of each visit. Large pool and poolside cabana. The adjacent bar is a gathering spot for the deep sea sport fishermen who also visit there between sorties out in search of Marlin etc.
One explanation for the presence of numerous sharks at the dive sites and around the island in general is that the sport fishermen clean their catches near or in the marina harbor which attracts sharks to that region of the island. We observed feeding frenzies in the harbor when catches were being cleaned. The dive operation does not engage in shark feeding. But they don't have to.
